Mountains and Valleys
The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them.
Psalm 104:8
We left Wengen on Saturday to visit Luzern and Bern before training to Zermatt. We arrived under cloud cover on Monday and the next day was a washout. Yesterday was the first day that the Mattertal Valley revealed its grandeur.
The boys and I set out for am ambitious hike along the Europaweg trail which is described as “the most dramatic and specatcular high-level route in the Valais.” We walked ridges, skirted cliffs with fixed ropes, crossed avalanche zones, and traversed a 1500 meter suspension bridge. It was an epic day.
The views did not disappoint as each turn in the trail seemed to reveal a new perspective on the Matterhorn (pictured in this post with our village, Zermatt, far below) or another alp altogether. The beauty and majesty of the mountains and valleys were stunning; it was simply overwhelming.
Calvin sums up the day quite well for me in his commentary on Psalm 19:1:
As soon as we acknowledge God to be the supreme Architect, who has erected the beauteous fabric of the universe, our minds must necessarily be ravished with wonder at his infinite goodness, wisdom, and power. [1]
The majesty of God’s works, in all their artistry and detail, direct us to him, ravishing us with wonder at his perfections.
